  1. Text to Speech Software Information- Read Me First

  3. This software enables your Macintosh to provide Text to Speech capabilities for applications that support Text to Speech.  SimpleText, posted here, is an example of an application that supports Text to Speech.

  5. There are two options available, MacinTalk 2 or MacinTalk Pro, when installing Text to Speech software:

  7. Option #1 - MacinTalk 2 -----------------------

  9. MacinTalk 2 is well suited for low-end environments where available memory is low and CPU bandwidth is limited. Minimum configuration is System 6.0.7 running on a Mac Plus.

  11. To use MacinTalk 2 you will need to download the following files:

  13.               Speech Manager (1.2.1) MacinTalk 2 (1.2)
  14.               MacInTalk2 Voices (1.2) SimpleText (1.1)

  17. Once downloaded, here are the steps to properly install the software:

  19. Step 1.  Create a new folder called "Voices" (without quotes) inside your Extensions folder.  (If you are running System 6, you'll need to create the "Voices" folder inside your System Folder.)

  21. Step 2.  Drag the "Speech Manager" extension into your Extensions folder.  (System 6 users need to drag the file into their System folder.)

  23. Step 3.  Drag the "MacinTalk 2" extension into your Extensions folder.  (System 6 users need to drag the file into their System folder.)

  25. Step 4.  Drag the "MacInTalk2 Voices" file into the newly created "Voices" folder.

  27. Step 5.  Restart.

  29. Step 6.  Use SimpleText to try out the Text to Speech software.

  33. Option #2 - MacinTalk Pro -------------------------

  35. MacinTalk Pro requires System 7 or greater.(?)

  37. To use MacinTalk Pro you will need to download the following files:

  39.               Speech Manager (1.2.1) MacinTalk Pro (1.2)
  40.               SimpleText (1.1)

In addition, you will need to download at least one of the voices from the Voices folder posted here (not the MacInTalk2 Voices file).  There are "High Quality" and "Small" versions of Agnes, Bruce and Victoria.  "High Quality" means that there's very little compression on the voice file resulting in high audio fidelity but larger size. "Small" means high compression on the voice file resulting in small voice footprint but lower audio fidelity.

  44. Step 1.  Create a new folder called "Voices" (without quotes) inside your Extensions folder.

  46. Step 2.  Drag the "Speech Manager" extension into your Extensions folder.

  48. Step 3.  Drag the "MacinTalk Pro" extension into your Extensions folder.

  50. Step 4.  Drag any of the voices that you have downloaded into the newly created "Voices" folder.
